Boyes’ ambitious new project, entitled The Saturn People’s Sound Collective is a 20-piece ensemble that draws on the creative influences of the Mingus, Ellington and Sun Ra big band traditions to realize a 21st-century nu-world sound that combines jazz, minimalist music, post-rock long-form melodic sensibilities and global music.
Imagine is Sun Ra, Steve Reich and Sonic Youth met up on the Silk Road . . . . with Maria Schneider along for the ride.
The group includes some of Vermont’s most notable musicians from a diverse array of backgrounds. The instrumentation includes 5 reeds (doubling on saxes, clarinets and flutes), 4 trombones, 3 trumpets/flugelhorns, 3 cellos, 1 violin, mallet percussion, guitar, bass, modified drum kit, and percussion (Indian tabla, South American cajon, Middle Eastern frame drums).About Brain Boyes:
About Brian Boyes (BA RUP ’95, MA EDU ’11)
Brian is a trumpeter, composer, arranger, bandleader, and multi-instrumentalist who has worked in Vermont for the past 18 years. His master’s thesis at Goddard, Infusing Performing Arts into Project Based Learning, has propelled him into his current work as an educator, where he has twice received special recognition from the Vermont Arts Alliance for his unique and creative approach to music education at the Cabot School.
He has shared the stage with artists such as Lester Bowie, Trey Anastasio, John Sinclair, Jody Diamond, Josh Roseman, Michael Ray, andMarshall Allen. He currently co-leads and plays trumpet with Movement Of The People: The Fela Kuti Project. This Friday, December 7th, Brian leads the Saturn People’s Sound Collective, a 20-person ensemble made possible in part by the Vermont Community Foundation’s Arts Endowment Fund.
