Progressive Education Symposium

October 23, 2008
Goddard College

The Progressive Education Symposium, October 23-25 at Goddard College, will bring together activists, educators, and scholars to explore our shared vocation and our vision of the future of progressive education. By sharing stories of our individual practices, exploring a variety of theories, developing key questions, and participating in dialogue, we hope to build toward a shared description of progressive education and a new vision of our common future.

This symposium is designed for a wide range of progressive educators, higher education, members of grassroots organizations and non-profits with educational missions, Pre K to 12 schools, holistic and integral educators. We encourage the participation of younger and culturally diverse persons.

To start our networking building our introductory session will begin Thursday evening after dinner. The opening event on Friday morning will include dialogue with notable educators Elizabeth Minnich, Art Chickering, Jill Tarule, Steve Shapiro, Ron Miller, and others. Saturday morning will feature a roundtable of presidents from progressive education colleges. The symposium's aim is to foster dialogue and to this end there will twelve topic sessions including forming alliances with grassroots and other change organizations; establishing sustainable communities; making progressive education more accessible; learning/teaching justice; re-energizing teachers; delivering progressive education online. Another key activity will be design sessions to produce proposals regarding global outreach, a national PE conference, doctoral programs and cooperative models. Saturday night we will have a chance to engage with the intersection of art and progressive education. Sunday morning provides time for interest groups to convene.

In order to make the symposium accessible, a registration fee, including meals, and has been kept to a minimum. For those who register before September 15, there is a $50 reduction in the registration fee. We hope you will join us.
