Join us at the beautiful, Plainfield, Vermont campus for a conference and retreat featuring rejuvenation and professional development.  All educators welcome - open to the public!

GEAR takes place over four days during the BA and MA in Education residency, and includes workshops and discussion sessions following an Unconference model.  Along with professional development (minimum of 10 hours), participants can expect to leave the summer retreat relaxed and re-energized. In addition to workshops and dialogues, there is time for swimming, yoga, music, hiking, and other activities.

Housing on campus is available: Dorms open Monday evening and close Thursday morning. Read below for workshop descriptions and fee structures.

Workshops:

  • Conferencing for Essay Writing
    • Learn a successful lesson structure for managing a three-day lesson where students drafted and wrote essays in class, supported their partner, received individualized instruction and homework and participated to a class-wide art project.
  • Financial Literacy for High School Students
    • This workshop will describe strategies for integrating financial skills into the classroom.
  • Literacy and Project Based Learning
    • Discuss project-based learning and strategies for working these into a traditional classroom environment. The primary focus will be how to connect to Core Curriculum Standards (CCS), especially literacy standards.
  • Copyright and Fair Use in the Classroom: Citing Sources is not Enough 
    • Through discussion and examples, participants will develop a working knowledge of copyright, fair use and public domain. Then will apply that knowledge to a range of typical classroom scenarios.
  • Using Literacy in the context of Visual Art
    • In this workshop, we will consider how we analyze visual information and how perception, value judgments, and prejudices cloud our ability to formulate a clear and accurate representation of an object.
  • So you don't want to be here?
    • A candid and realistic approach on how to work with kids who don't want to be in school.
  • Ecological Literacy in the Classroom
    • Participants will discuss the importance of ecological literacy and ways to incorporate ecological literacy into the classroom.
  • Teaching Literacy through Multimedia
    • Explore different ways to look at and use entertainment media as a source for literacy development, as well as how to teach students to be critical and thoughtful about the content they are exposed to on an ever-increasing basis.
  • Technology in our Favor
    • Utilizing Google Apps to create and administer CCS-aligned writing assessments.

GEAR Costs and Registration Options:  

  • Option 1:  $150 for all events, 8 meals (Monday dinner - Thursday breakfast), no housing.
  • Option 2:  $270 for all events, 8 meals and 3 nights on-campus housing, double room; limited space   
  • Option 3:  $345 for all events, 8 meals and 3 nights on-campus housing, single room; limited space
