Combining the signature sounds of the Indian tabla and Middle Eastern oud, 35th Parallel’s Gabe Halberg and Mac Ritchey have been charting new musical territory for over a decade.  Now the Central Vermont duo comes to Goddard with a revitalized version of its expanded group—the 35th Parallel MediterrAsian Jazz Ensemble.

Featuring a new lineup, the 6-piece band blends influences from Turkish, Armenian, Indian, and Arab traditions, steeped in a jazz sensibility and spiced with improvisation. The group includes some of Vermont’s finest players from bands as diverse as Movement of the People, viperHouse, Vorcza, the Saturn People’s Sound Collective.

Big Heavy World says, "35th Parallel conjures to music the 'mystical realism' that Gabriel Garcia Marquez brings to literature."

About the band:

The MediterrAsian Jazz Ensemble was formed in 2004, commissioned by the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts.  Other performances have included Dartmouth College’s Hopkins Center, the Dibden Center for the Arts, UNH SolarFest, and the DeCordova Museum.

35th Parallel is currently working on their third album, due for release in 2014.  The group’s previous recordings were praised for their musical chemistry and sonic adventurousness.  One reviewer wrote, “The best of the 'melting pot' mentality, using complementary instruments and styles to stretch the boundaries of traditional and world music.”

Band members are:

  • Gabe Halberg (BA GV '95) - tabla, frame drums, cajon, percussion

  • Mac Ritchey - oud, electric oud, bouzouki, guitar
